A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage
A lighter read than most of the books this year. This is a history of six major types of drinks in human history. It starts with beer, then wine, both staples in the ancient world. These accompanied the beginnings of agriculture and we’re used as currency on occasion. Unlike the modern equivalents, these were watered down when drunk by sophisticated people. Then distilled drinks appeared, followed by coffee and tea. Finally, the Colas of the 20th century.
All of these drinks arose from the human effort to have safe, clean drinking water. With the modern methods of mass water purification, and a world population above 7 billion, the control of access to clean drinking water remains critical to human success.
I recommend this as an entertaining light history book that is still packed with interesting stories and fundamental facts about the things we drink.
